‘How many times should I fucking tell you, you asshole, she’s only a guest. A temporary guest.’
‘A temporary guest who you just happened to take to that secret condo you wouldn’t even let me go to? Yeah, indeed’, he finished with a laugh, irritating me to my bones. For the thousandth time today, I wondered how I could have been so senseless enough to blab to Collins. He annoyed me like a damn woman.
‘Collins, calm the fuck down. She is just a stranger.’
‘A stranger you kissed.’
I hadn’t told him that one but somehow he’d managed to know. And I couldn’t deny it, not when the memory of everything still burned in my chest. I groaned, deciding that this call had gone on for long enough.
‘For the love of God man, leave it alone.’
‘I see love in the aiiiirrrrr, so sweet and gooooood,
love that will not caaaaaaare ‘bout the season’s mooooood’
Oh no, he’d started to sing. That was the red light. I punched the damn button and cut the call. I knew he was probably laughing his ass out at the other end, congratulating himself for annoying the shit out of me. I wondered, once again, why the hell I kept him beside me.
Lucy. Her name was Lucy, at least that was what she’d told Natalie, my secretary, when she’d called the number I left for her. She’d asked for some groceries. Natalie had passed on the message to Collins because I had been in a meeting and that was how he got to know about this whole thing in the first place.
The groceries had been delivered soon after I’d confirmed the order. Collins, however, hadn’t been able to stop yapping about it all day, every chance he got. I could understand his excitement though. This was the only woman I’d shown any significant care for since what happened three years ago. I’d even brought her to my own private condo which I kept locked to everyone else. And we hadn’t even had sex.
Perhaps I was like this because we hadn’t had sex, I thought as I pulled into the garage. It made sense – I wanted her, obviously. And she had such a hold over me because I wasn’t letting myself have her.
But no, that was a faulty logic. No single woman was that strong and none would ever be, especially not someone like her. Lucy. Fuck, even her name sounded innocent. It was time to end this whole charade and move on with my straightforward life. She wanted to meet the C.E.O of FAMECO. And that was me. I hadn’t gotten around to telling her that though. Maybe it was because of the fearless way she had called me out the first time I met her or that she refused to be intimidated by me but I had taken some sort of pleasure at first not telling her who I was. But all that would end now.
I stepped out of the car and walked up to my apartment with a one-track mind.
